Global Economic Crisis and Social Entrepreneurship: Impacts, Implications and Initiatives

Welcome to ISEA’s online fora on Social Entrepreneurship and the Global Economic Crisis:   Impacts, Implications and Initiatives.  This is ISEA’s initial offering in the Forum section of its website. 

As its title suggests, the e-fora series is aimed at providing a voice and a platform for actors in the social enterprise sector in Asia to tackle the global economic crisis.  The e-fora has the following objectives:

·        To develop a shared understanding of the crisis and its differentiated impacts on various social enterprise segments and their support institutions in Asia

·        To share how social enterprises and their support institutions in the region are responding to the global economic crisis

·        To evolve joint perspectives in viewing the threats and opportunities that the crisis brings to the  social enterprise sector in Asia

·        To develop joint initiatives which may be taken up by ISEA, its members, partners and other interested parties, in response to the crisis and beyond   

Various discussion threads of the e-forum series shall be facilitated by ISEA’s member organizations and partners from various sectors and countries.  Unless otherwise specified, each discussion thread shall run for two weeks.  After the facilitating institution opens the discussion thread, interested parties are encouraged to post their inputs any time of the day.  The facilitating institution shall be on line for a period of the day specified by them, and shall also be posting a synthesis of what has transformed on a weekly basis.

As kick-off, we shall be launching the e-forum on Global Economic Crisis and Microfinance:  Impacts, Implications and Initiatives,  as we also formally launch ISEA’s website on June 19, 2009.  This shall be facilitated  by the International Network of Alternative Financial Institutions-Philippines (INAFI-Philippines). 

Other discussion threads that shall be opened in the coming weeks and their respective facilitating institutions are:

·        Global Economic Crisis and Cooperatives:  Impacts, Implications and Initiatives, to be facilitated by VICTO-National

·        Global Economic Crisis and Social Entrepreneurship in India:  Impacts, Implications and Initiatives, to be facilitated by Dhan Foundation and Tata-Dhan Academy

·        Global Economic Crisis and Social Entrepreneurship in Indonesia:  Impacts, Implications and Initiatives, to be facilitated by Bina Swadaya

Sectoral discussion threads (such as the discussion thread on microfinance and cooperatives) shall be conducted in English.  However, country-level discussion threads (such as the discussion threads for Indonesia and India) may be conducted using a local language chosen by the facilitator (mixed with English if deemed appropriate) to encourage wider participation.  The facilitator shall be providing a weekly synthesis in the chosen language and English to encourage in-country and cross-country interaction. 

The opening of the discussion threads for cooperatives, Indonesia and India, as well as other discussion threads shall be announced as they are finalized.

We enjoin ISEA members, partners and other actors of the social enterprise sector in Asia to make use of this platform to advance the cause of social entrepreneurship at a time that we are faced with both grave threats and golden opportunities.  For more information, please get in touch through info@isea-group.net
